What is Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation involves any of these procedures: the use of injectables, fillers, fat transfer, or implants. Putting lip implants is a way to create plumper lips with longer-lasting results than those of injectables and fillers.

Surgical Lip Enhancement / Lip Augmentation | NYC

Just as with breast augmentation, lip implants come in saline or silicone. For a more natural look, the patient may choose to use a fat transfer method of gaining fuller lips. Another option for surgical lip enhancement is a lip lift. A lip lift tightens the lip skin and lifts its natural curve.

Who is the ideal candidate?

Lip enhancement through surgery may be right for you if:

  • Your lips have become droopy
  • You want fuller lips without having many repeat procedures
  • Your lips have thinned
  • Your lip line borders have faded

Lip Augmentation Procedure

When using saline lip implants, the surgeon inserts an implant into the lips through a small incision and then filled with saline. For silicone implants, the implant is inserted through the corners or tops of the lips and manually molded, much like an injectable filler. With a lip lift, the surgeon makes incisions at the base of the nose or corners of the mouth and elevates the skin to a higher position.

Quick Facts

  • General or local anesthesia with sedation
  • Long-lasting results
  • Normally an outpatient procedure
  • Recovery in about 2 weeks

Lip Augmentation Recovery

Your lips will feel tender for a short period of time. If swelling/bruising occurs, it should subside in two to three days. Eat soft foods until the incision wounds have healed.

Other FAQs

What are the medical considerations for lip augmentation?

The patient should make sure to declare any allergies due to the possible allergic reaction to the implants. Also, as local or general anesthesia is to be used, the patient should inform the surgeon of any respiratory problems that can be compounded by anesthesia.

Whether fillers or implants, a successful lip augmentation depends on your complete medical condition disclosure as well as having a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform the procedure. The surgeon should ensure using only FDA approved products and be able to assess which one of these will be best for the patient.

Preoperative Measures

Two weeks before the procedure, you might have to stop some medications you are taking. Be sure to inform your surgeon of what you take whether vitamins, medications, or herbs/herbal supplements.

No drinking/eating the night before the procedure.

Wear comfortable clothes, and do not wear makeup, contact lenses, nor jewelry.

With injectable fillers, this is less invasive and you can drive yourself home, as long as you are not given any medication such as painkillers, that can affect your driving. With lip implants, you should arrange for a drive home.
