Sometime early in your life, you may have been told that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. This is true. Someone may have also told you that judging a book by its cover is wrong. Not only does this directly contradict the first lesson, but it also goes against our very nature! As humans, we have been wired with the innate ability (and primal need) to “judge a book by its cover.” To do this means to make a quick judgment of another human’s character based on appearance.
Today, making snap judgments doesn’t have the same implications it did thousands of years ago, when a human had to quickly differentiate between friend and foe. Still, we do it.

We do it, and we don’t even know it. And . . . it matters. Here’s why:

  • Employers offer jobs and promotions partially based on appearance. This is proven by research, as is the fact that people with attractive facial features tend to earn more than counterparts who may not be as attractive.
  • Facial shapes do more than affect appearance, they give other subconscious clues about your personality. Your oblong face may suggest that you are a workaholic. A square face is associated with dominating traits.
  • Facial features are not excluded from the whole face-reading habit. For instance, thin, straight lips make a person seem unemotional and self-controlled.
Examples of how the shape of a person’s face, lips, eyes, nose, and other features affect human interaction go on and on. It’s quite fascinating, really. It can help us understand, at least in part, why we strive to achieve and preserve beauty, and allows us to see that it really has very little to do with vanity or aging at all.
